Lawrence Mirel

Lawrence Mirel is a partner in the insurance practice of Wiley Rein LLP and an associate fellow of the R Street Institute.

Larry was commissioner of the District of Columbia’s Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking from 1999 to 2005. He is a noted legal expert on terrorism risk, natural catastrophe insurance, health insurance policy, privacy compliance, McCarran-Ferguson Act reform, collateralization requirements for non-U.S. reinsurers, regulation of captive insurers and risk retention groups, class action and medical malpractice reform and issues of state versus federal regulation.

In 2008, he received the District of Columbia Primary Care Association’s Purple Heart Award. He is also the recipient of the AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest ranking by peers for general ethical standards and legal ability.
