10 groups launch copyright coalition
CDT and R Street are among the 10 consumer and business tech groups standing up a new alliance on copyright policy today, pushing lawmakers to rethink their approach to intellectual property in a digital world where anyone can be a creator. The organization, called ReCreate, will try to pick up the pieces of a copyright debate that’s spun in circles since the downfall of SOPA and PIPA more than three years ago, focusing on sticking up for average consumer rights like fair use. “To try to sort of help restore the original conception of copyright to some extent,” is how R Street Executive Director Andrew Moylan described the group’s goals. “The balanced approach that we’re talking about in the context of the coalition comes from the language of the constitution: To promote the progress of science and the useful arts.” CTIA, CEA, Public Knowledge and EFF are also part of the group, which will be led by former Wyden aide and CCIA vice president Josh Lamel.
