Overview

The U.S. cybersecurity regulatory landscape is complex, with overlapping and inconsistent regulations across international, federal, state, and local levels. These gaps and variations in standards create both compliance challenges and cybersecurity vulnerabilities, bringing significant attention to the concept of regulatory harmonization.

The White House’s National Cybersecurity Strategy addressed this concept, resulting in a request for information (RFI) that generated 86 responses. R Street’s latest report on regulatory harmonization analyzes responses to the Office of the National Cyber Director’s RFI and offers recommendations. The most recent action came from Sen. Gary Peters, who introduced the “Streamlining Federal Cybersecurity Regulations Act” following a Senate hearing last month.

There remains much more to do to move regulatory harmonization from a concept to reality. We invite you to an online discussion about the current state of regulatory harmonization efforts and the path ahead. We will discuss the goal of regulatory harmonization, how baselines might be developed, and how to move forward with so many federal agencies and independent regulators involved. The event features a keynote address by Sen. Peters and a panel of experts from academia, government, and industry.
