Overview

In May 2023, CBS news magazine 60 Minutes took a deep dive into overcharging on the part of Pentagon contractors, a problem that has enriched large corporations at the expense of taxpayers and our national security. Despite the attention the report received, outside the ongoing efforts of a small handful of legislators, there’s been little public action on the part of Congress to hold contractors accountable.

Join us for a virtual discussion with leading experts on Pentagon politics, oversight, and spending. We’ll ask how this happened, why it keeps happening, and what changes are necessary to prevent future price gouging.

This is the first in a series of conversations revisiting overlooked opportunities for a public reckoning and reform. When serious issues go unaddressed, the R Street Institute has a simple suggestion: “Someone should do something about that.”
